Stock photo sites are online collections where photographers submit their images for others to use. The sites usually make it clear whether photos can be used for free, or if payment is required. 

• Stock.xchg (SXC) contains 400,000 free to use stock images (as of April 2008) submitted by keen photographers.  Any usage restrictions are stated clearly for each image.

Other sites (which offer images for free) include:

• MorgueFile contains free high resolution digital stock photography for either corporate or public use
• FreeFoto.com is, according to their website, ‘the largest collection of free photographs for private non-commercial use on the Internet'. There is, however, a charge for any commercial usage
• FreePhotosBank has a smaller collection of free photos but is still useful to browse by category

• Dreamstime has a free section.

• StockVault You don't have to sign up to be able to download images and all images on this site are free for personal and non-commercial usage.
